Miniatures

“Miniato” in Italian means “illuminated” and miniatures in general in the Western medieval culture were comprised of gold or silver leaf with egg tempera paint. My miniatures have these components: egg tempera, some acrylic, some watercolour and gouache paint and sometimes oil paint, all realised on handmade acid free paper or prepared linen. The works range from 3cm x 4cm to the approximate size of an iPhone.

The following 5 images are an interpretation of T.S. Eliot’s poem “Sweeney among the Nightingales”. The biggest is about 14 cm x 7 cm.

The next 6 images are extracts from a miniature book called “I came upon some tiny words”. I wrote two poems that start from each end of the book and meet in the middle. The book itself is about 3 cm x 4 cm. The poems were inspired by an argument I overheard from the open window of my neighbours on the 4th floor from my studio. See video under category of Artist Books for a demonstration of the whole book.
